Dear Treetops Patients

At the end of such an incredibly busy month I find myself taking a step back to applaud the Treetops team, for who they are and what they do.

I really can not speak highly enough of them and all that they aspire to achieve, from the amazing friendly reception team, the supporting and hard working nurses to our skilled and gentle clinicians, all of whom are encouraged and enthused by a committed and passionate owner. Their focus is always ‘patient first’ and they are ardent about developing the care, service and techniques they provide.

This month more than most, we have witnessed our phone lines busier than normal and the team are really conscious of this and they do apologise.  Please always know when they can not answer your call it is because they are helping patients like yourself.  Furthermore, there are  occasions when our clinicians run late and they all sincerely apologise for keeping you waiting.  I would like to reassure you, when this happens it will be due to them treating and caring for another patient and as a team they are trying extra hard to run to time without compromising clinical care and they thank you for your patience.  A few patients this month have shared their frustration at our waiting rooms remaining closed. The team understands that waiting in the car park does not create the relaxed and comfortable atmosphere they wish for you, yet please allow this to increase your confidence that Treetops will always have your safety and the safety of our team at the forefront of all we do.

In my recollection of the past month, I had an overwhelming feeling of respect for the Treetops team and an incredible feeling of gratitude. Moreover, without you, our patients, we would not be here, so I thank you for placing your confidence in Treetops. I can hand on heart say, we believe it is well placed, we hope you agree.

Happy November

With sincere best wishes

Louise

ICON – White Spot Removal
What is ICON?
Removal of white spots without using a filling or removing tooth structure. Special gel is used to remove the mineral from the affected area and white filling material is infiltrated in its place. This way the structure of the enamel (the strongest material in the body) stays in good condition – and untouched!Procedure
Patients whiten their teeth for 4 weeks prior to the ICON procedure.  This is to brighten the teeth as much as possible.Without anaesthetic (injections) as they are not necessary, we pop a sheet over the mouth (rubber dam) and use an ICON kit

ICON kit consists of a specialist gel which wears away the mineral of the tooth (and the white spot). The gel is delicately applied to the tooth surface only.

We get great results which just need regular polishing, without damaging the tooth structure.  The patients who have received this treatment from Amandeep have been thrilled with the results!

You may of noticed a few new faces around the practice recently.
We are delighted to announce three new team members!Next time you visit, feel free to say hello to Chloe, Dr Temitope and Adele!

Gum disease and winter coughs

Many of us are more susceptible to coughs and chest infections during the winter but, according to a recent study, keeping dentally fit could help to alleviate or prevent symptoms.

Research presented last year in the Journal of Periodontology found a link between gum disease and respiratory infections such as bronchitis. It’s thought that bacteria responsible for gum disease can spread to the lungs in inhaled droplets and either cause infection or worsen existing lung conditions. This could mean that following a good oral health routine and preventing gum disease could help your overall wellbeing this winter.

Speak to our dentists and hygienists about brushing, flossing and Interdental cleaning techniques.

A facial aesthetic patient shares her thanks following her recent Sunekos appointment….
The team chatted with this lovely lady at the end of her treatment and they too were overwhelmed with the results (she looked amazing).  More importantly, the patient’s happiness just blew the team away, everyone went home that day with a feeling of great achievement!
On Friday 22nd October the Treetops Team joined thousands of amazing people and `wore it pink` to celebrate Breast Cancer Awareness Month.  We have come together with others to help make life-changing research happen and to raise awareness.
Over the past year, at a time when everything from treatment to screenings has been disrupted, there have been many people diagnosed with Breast Cancer.  This has only made us more determined to make sure we play our role.  This amazing charity helps to provide support in the here and now and much hope for the future. As you can see, the Treetops Team looked fabulous!
Thank you to the Treetops Team for showing their support by ‘wearing it pink’!

Gum disease is a condition called Periodontitis. The Periodontium is the term for the tissues that hold your teeth in your jaws.  Periodontitis is a destructive and IRREVERSIBLE disease of the tissues.  The main problem with periodontitis is that we do not understand its causes very well, which is why we struggle to treat it effectively. What we do know is there are several risk factors which make people more susceptible:-

  • Medical problems such as diabetes – There seems to be a strong link between type 1 diabetes and periodontitis which may be genetic. Even if you do not have diabetes yourself,  having someone in your family, such as a parent or grandparent appears to be a factor.
  • Smoking – This causes blood vessels to clog with fatty tissue and also the toxins in the cigarettes or tobacco adversely affects the white blood cells that fight their bugs.  With a person who smokes, not enough blood gets to the site and the blood that does reach, is less effective.
  • Inadequate Oral Hygiene – By this we mean an individual not maintaining the level of plaque in their mouth well enough to keep it healthy and there is too much calculus or the old fashioned term tartar.

The calculus needs to be removed for three very important reasons:

It is a rough calcified material that comes from the salivary glands and under the microscope it appears like sandpaper.  Ideal for the plaque bugs to breed on and impossible to keep down because it is microscopic.

Calculus can occur on all surfaces, most commonly seen behind the lower front teeth and on the cheek surfaces of the upper molars. This is where the major salivary glands are, in the cheeks and on the floor of the mouth. Above the gum calculus is a creamy colour, below the gum it tends to be black/brown probably discoloured by blood breakdown products.

Calculus cannot be removed with a toothbrush. This is the most important fact. It will need to be removed by a professional hygienist.

Also Periodontitis is painless and it usually makes an appearance in your mid 20`s but can progress over the rest of your life.  If you show no signs of it by the time you are 35 years of age then it is unlikely to affect you going forward.  It does only affect 10-15% of the population but we cannot identify who will get it and when.

These are the reasons why you need to stick to routine hygienist visits, because keeping your mouth healthy really is a team effort. If you can remove the plaque and regulate the frequency of your sugar intake at home and we remove the calculus, together we can maintain good health!

Thank you Dr Reece
