Dear Treetops Patients

Dentistry has been catapulted into the limelight on many occasions over the past few years with headlines such as ‘Millions of patients face being left without a dentist as one in five practices are on the brink of collapse’, ‘Thousands of dental patients will be forced to find a new dentist after a private health company (Bupa) announced the closure of two North Wales practices.’  We wanted to take this opportunity to reassure you that the Treetops team is stronger than ever.  We are committed to providing you with the most up to date technology, complimented by the latest techniques and surrounded and supported by an incredibly professional, skilled and qualified team.  We have never stopped investing in all that is Treetops and to give you a brief insight into how we have developed our services over the past few years here are just a few …

Proudly increased the services we offer by delivering Facial and Body Aesthetic Solutions – Botox, Facial Fillers, Fat Dissolving, Sunekos, Profhilo & B12 injections.

We work incredibly hard behind the scenes to keep ahead of the game, educate ourselves on how to develop and not just our equipment and techniques, yet also our patient journey and our team approach.

Happy October!
Louise

From time to time we like to quiz our staff members about themselves, so you can get to know them a bit better, today is our lovely hygienist Karen.

So Karen……

How long have you worked at Treetops Dental Surgery?
I have been a Treetops member of staff since August 2019

Have you always been a hygienist and what was your first job?
I started working full time as a dental nurse in 1996 and then continued on to qualify as a dental hygienist in 2000, so it would be fair to say I have a wee bit of experience!

If you could swap jobs with anyone for a day who would it be?
I would love to own a canine rehabilitation and agility centre as I am a qualified canine massage therapist.  So I would swap jobs with anyone working there!

What is your dream job?
Retirement! Only joking as above I would love to own my own canine rehabilitation centre.

What is your funniest memory working at Treetops?
Nurse Simi discovering I don’t own a microwave and not understanding how I function without one!

What did you want to be as you were growing up?
A physiotherapist because I love to help people overcome and recover.

What can a patient do to prepare for a hygiene visit?
To always follow our advice in how to keep your gums healthy!

What are your hobbies and passions outside of work?
I attend regular dog agility events with my own dogs which I love and recently I have started open water swimming which is so invigorating!

Thank you Karen!

Treetops Dental Surgery has been sponsoring ‘Support Staffordshire’ with their volunteer awards for a number of years, these awards are aimed at publicly recognising and celebrating the valuable contribution volunteers play in supporting our community.

This is a great opportunity for the community to show their appreciation for the work carried out by an amazing army of incredibly inspiring hidden heroes.

Liz and Naomi in the Treetops Administration Team had the pleasure of awarding Matt, a Staffordshire volunteer, a ‘Personal Achievement Award’. Please read all about Matt and how his incredible work through Covid made him a worthy winner:

Matt is autistic.  Before Covid, Matt was a volunteer with Care Plus in a Retirement Living Scheme as a lunch time assistant.  Sadly, in March 2020, Matt, like many of the volunteers was ‘furloughed’.

People who live in Care Plus Retirement Living Schemes are elderly and live independently in their own apartment or bungalow yet they have the support of a Retirement Living Officer. In March 2020 the majority of the residents self-isolated in their own homes.  As you can imagine this presented the need for someone to shop for their essential groceries.  Matt volunteered to act as a ‘Covid-19 Essential Shopper’ and in the last 12 months has supported residents at Corsers Court in Perton.  The Housing and Wellbeing Manager, Nicky said, ‘ A number of residents, without his help, would have been in ‘quite a pickle’’.

It was not easy for Matt as he had to overcome a number of personal challenges to carry out this role. Because of his autism, Matt needs routine and struggles when this routine changes. Matt was also struggling with the social changes in the world and the new rules we were all now living by. Firstly Matt had never shopped before and did not know how to shop normally, let alone during lockdown. Matt was shown the process of queueing to go into the store, how to find and select the products, where to pay for the items and the process of bagging them after the cashier had rung it through.  In addition to all of this, handling the resident’s cash and returning their change with the shopping and receipt was all new to him. He was so anxious the first day, but he did it and showed a great amount of bravery.

Finally, Matt struggled for a long time with the mask wearing and the sensation on his face, but he wore it to do the shopping for the residents.  In the end he used a washable mask, rather than a paper surgical mask, which he meticulously washed after every visit.  He was also meticulous with his hand sanitising and maintaining social distance.  More recently, with the new strain of Covid-19, Matt has also managed to adjust well to wearing a face shield as well, which is in line with Care Plus policy.

Well done Matt! Congratulations, you are indeed a Covid-19 hero and a very worthy winner of the South Staffordshire Volunteer Star Award.

Breast Cancer Awareness
Wear it pink Day
22nd October 2021

On Friday 22 October 2021, the Treetops team will wear pink in order to raise awareness for breast cancer. Please email or tag us on our social media pages if you want to join us!
If there ever was a time to put on that pink top, proudly drape that pink feather boa around your neck or pull up those pink socks, it’s now.

Welcome back!  In last months article I shared with you about tooth decay and plaque (the white sticky film on the teeth) and plaque is also the primary agent when it comes to gum disease.Firstly healthy gums DO NOT bleed!  Gums should be pink, firm and tight to the teeth and you should be able to brush, floss and have them scaled with the ultra sonic scaler without them bleeding.  This is the most important thing to understand that this is healthy.

If too much plaque is left in contact with the gums, then the first thing that develops is a condition called Gingivitis, this is not a disease, the term means gum inflammation and this is the bodies response to too many bugs.

Gingivitis is described as red swollen gums that bleed on brushing.  The body recognises too many bugs and then sends blood to fight them, this discolours the surrounding tissue red and causes it to swell.  Once the gum is swollen the covering skin stretches and thins and is more easily damaged, therefore when you brush your teeth, you are grazing your gums and they bleed.

The beauty of this process is that it is totally reversible, the tissues return to normal without permanent damage. Keep up with your good oral hygiene practices and hygiene appointments!

Denture Case by Dr Amandeep Bhamber and Steve
A lovely patient presented with a full set of dentures that over time had considerably deteriorated. Dr Amandeep Bhamber took impressions of the patients mouth and again worked very closely with our inhouse technician, Steve.  I think you will agree he constructed a work of art!  Not only did they fit correctly but they looked so incredubly natural. As you can see below our patient was very pleased.I have had no problems at all, Amandeep was very friendly, polite and a real people person. My dentures took a bit of getting used to as I had my old dentures in for 20 years.  My wife tells me her shopping bill has gone up so I know I am eating ok!. I wouldn’t hesitate to come back again.
Why did the dentist make a poor date with the manicurist?
Because they fought both tooth and nail!
What did the dentist say when Tiger Woods came in for an appointment? You have a hole in one.
What did the dentist say to the tooth when he had to leave the room? I’ll fill you in when I get back.
